I know I should write something about the startling revelation that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) appears to be supporting insurgents and terrorists in Afghanistan, but I am just too shocked, shocked to comment at the moment.
In other news, Captain Renault has uncovered an illegal gambling ring at Rick's Cafe in Casablanca.
What pakistan is saying in past is sa7 years is "Don't put pressure on us you American fools. We are Pakistanis, Allah has granted us superior mental capabilities and you fool Americans can be tricked all day long. Whatever success you think you are having, just wait one day and see who Allah is supporting in the end! Your pressure is useless, we will do what we want to do when we want to do it and yes, sometimes we will make it look a little like we are cooperating with you but really we want to trick you. It is all just a game and Pakistan has been designated by Allah to help create a just planet and we must do what we must do. Give us military weaponry and we will cooperate here and there, but you are big fools to think your American agenda is our Pakistani agenda!"

What's shocking is that the US is only just now getting around to reading Pakistan the riot act on ISI support to Taliban.
ReplyDeleteNow that the PPP-led govt of Zardari and Gilani have chickened out of putting the leash on ISI's jaws, hopefully Nawaz Sharif will raise his voice. Although Nawaz is traditionally associated with conservative Islam and Zia's legacy, the fact is that when the military overthrew him, none of the religious conservatives raised a finger in his defense. Nawaz has been campaigning for restoration of the Supreme Court judges, and there's no reason why he can't extend his campaign to include putting a leash on ISI. Especially when the praetorians like ISI were the ones who helped Musharraf overthrow him. Given that Nawaz has a natural advantage in his home constituency of Punjab, getting ISI/praetorians out of the way could hand him the keys to the country.
I think Mr. Gilani should have been the one to demand of GW Bush and his govt, what the heck were you thinking in the last 7 years?
ReplyDeleteAfter all its the Bush administration with its crimes of commission and omission which played a decisive role in shaping Pakistani policy, not Mr. Gilani who just got in the picture a few months ago.
I'd say even the average Wash. think tank expert has played a bigger role in shaping Pakistan policy then any civilian member of government in Pakistan(and I say this as an Indian).
All this outrage is just meaningless melodrama, unless the US itself admits its Pak policy has been ruinous for Afghanistan.
One American blunder after the next after the next after the next.

What all the Pakistan scare-stories amount to is more support of the position of the Democrats and Barack Obama, that Afghanistan is the good war and Pakistan is the reason we are bogged down. This is nonsense, but we need to be able to look forward to years more war and here come the rationales.

Even the German Foreign Minister is all excited about war in Afghanistan. So, Sarkozy and Kouchner have company. Obama was effective at selling what European conservatives want, which is more war (mostly American).

ReplyDeleteLooking at patterns of behaviour and intent by the Pakistani military and intelligence since the 90s, I believe the current revelation could serve multiple purposes.
India and Pakistan's relationship is now at a low point since 2003. This can prompt the Pakistan military and ISI to send more of its troops and assets to the Indian border, leaving Taliban and related groups with less interference than even before. This was the response in 2003.
Also, looking at the language of blame, the Pakistani civilian government seems the focus of blame, and Musharraf is being seen with nostalgia as a military man that could better control the ISI. The civilian government thus is being discredited as an effective political agency and the idea of military dictatorship bolstered.
This is patently false. The ISI was similarly active under Musharraf, and its independence and current ideology was established under military rule.
I'm concerned that the incident will serve the dual purpose of shifting Pakistani resources away from the NWFP/FATA/Balochestan to the Indian frontier and also of discrediting the very idea of a civilian government that really is not the origin of this particular problem in the first place.
